At MSK, our number one priority is your overall physical well-being. As supporters of all health matters related to the musculoskeletal (MSK) system, our services are especially popular among both professional and novice athletes alike.

The athletic clientele comes with their own unique set of needs and concerns — MSK offers equally specialized services that can help these active individuals maintain a fantastic quality of life all while looking after their body in the best way possible. At the core of this service is sports chiropractic.

What is Sports Chiropractic?

Sports chiropractic refers to the professional practice of managing and prevention sports-related injuries. Our MSK sports chiropractors understand and promote safe body movements that are involved in physical activity, and are well-equipped to train athletes on proper movement mechanics to optimize performance and reduce injury risk. While chiropractors are known for their expertise in assessing and treating the spine, the sports chiropractors at MSK are also experts at assessment and sports rehabilitation of conditions affecting the shoulders, arms, hands, hips, knees and ankles.

Aside from injury prevention, our MSK chiropractors can also intervene with existing injuries to protect athletes against behaviours that would further cause harm. If an athlete is already experiencing an injury, a chiropractor is qualified to analyze the extent of the damage and make recommendations for certain interventions and exercises that can help provide relief and speed recovery. If X-rays or special imaging is required or a referral to another specialist, our sports chiropractors can facilitate the necessary steps. The input of a sports chiropractor can enable injured athletes to return to their ideal level of optimal performance.

Furthermore, sports chiropractic is also useful for any athlete who is looking to reach their full potential while protecting the wellbeing of their body. Our MSK sports chiropractors are able to provide a personalized evaluation of an athlete’s capabilities and make performance recommendations that can help athletes safely excel in their activities.

When Should I See a Sports Chiropractor?

There are many different reasons why an athlete may seek out the help of a sports chiropractor. While many patients are already experiencing an injury that is interfering with their ability to practice their sport or even go about their daily lives, this is not always the case. Sometimes, these injuries may have recently occured, while other times they may be old injuries that are causing a flare-up.

Injury prevention is another popular reason to seek the advice of a sports chiropractor. A sports chiropractor will take a holistic look at a patient to determine how and when they could be most at risk for an injury, and can make recommendations based on their particular profile.

Other reasons to seek help from a sports chiropractor could include help with the following topics: posture, general pain, post-surgical recovery, stretching, and more. While many who are injured by physical activity are athletes, individuals who are not athletes may seek the help of a sports chiropractor if they are harmed through physical activity of any kind, such as through a recreational game or an exercise at the gym.

What Should I Expect at a Sports Chiropractic Appointment?

If you have never visited a sports chiropractor before, it is normal to be curious or even apprehensive about what to expect from your first appointment.

Most sports chiropractic sessions will begin with an intake meeting. Here, your sports chiropractor will ask you a number of questions and perform a series of physical observations in order to gain a complete understanding of your particular needs and challenges.

Then, you and your sports chiropractor will work out a plan together that will be based on your individual goals. Your sports chiropractor will be able to give you an overview of how many sessions you should expect, and how much improvement you can expect after each session.

Depending on your goals, your sports chiropractor may assign you homework after every session in the form of exercises or stretches. If you are seeking advice on how to optimize your performance, your sports chiropractor may also provide you with exercises related to these goals.

What Kind of Training Does a Sports Chiropractor Have?

In BC, any chiropractor can call themselves a sports chiropractor and athletes may benefit from chiropractic in general through the treatments outlined above but not all sports chiropractors are sports specialists.  In Canada the only recognized chiropractic sports specialty designation is referred to as a Fellow of the Royal College of Chiropractic Sports Sciences (Canada).  This can also be identified by the letters FRCCSS(C).

Fellowship in the RCCSS(C) is a very challenging multi-year process consisting of 1000 hours of on-field training in addition to university-based research courses and participation in multiple peer-reviewed academic research projects.  Chiropractors who are currently enrolled in the process of becoming a fellow are referred to as residents of the RCCSS(C).   Residents who have completed the process are certified as Fellows only after passing a rigorous 2-day written and practical examination.   In BC, calling oneself a sports chiropractor does not mean they are a Sports Fellow.

There are currently just over 100 Fellows of the RCCSS(C) in Canada.  MSK Clinics is proud to have both Fellows and Residents working with us and setting a high standard of care for the community and the athletes and patients we serve.
