What is Acupuncture

Acupuncture is a safe and effective technique aimed at reducing or modulating pain in an area in order to maximize function. It has been shown to modulate pain and can also have an effect on mood, fatigue and healing.

Acupuncture can be used as an alternative to medications for pain relief and can promote faster return to pre-injury levels of function. The technique involves inserting very fine needles into the skin at specific locations on the body. Stimulation of muscles, nerves and fascia can be achieved in a minimally invasive way while the treatment itself causes only minimal discomfort.

How Acupuncture helps

Effective in relieving a variety of painful disorders, both acute and chronic, acupuncture can be a used along with other physiotherapy treatment modalities to promote healing, increased function and return to previous activity levels.

Acupuncture can be used to treat a variety of musculoskeletal and neurological disorders including:

  • Neck and back pain
  • Headaches
  • Sciatica,
  • Tennis elbow
  • Tendinopathy,
  • Frozen shoulder
  • Neuralgia
  • Whiplash associated disorders.

Acupuncture stimulates the body to release endorphins, the body’s own pain-relieving substances which bind to receptors in the nervous system that relay pain through the body. This process results in decreased pain, improved relaxation and allows the body to heal itself more effectively.
