TMJ Dysfunction

Are you experiencing jaw pain?

The source could be TMJ dysfunction

Do you have trouble opening your mouth when eating or yawning? When you open or close your mouth, do you hear a popping sound? You may have TMJ dysfunction and will benefit from physiotherapy, massage therapy, and chiropractic therapy to correct it.

The temporomandibular joint (TMJ) is also referred to as the jaw. It is the joint that connects your jawbone to your skull. Injury or dysfunction in the TMJ, like in other joints, can cause pain and disability.

Pain and difficulty moving are symptoms of TMJ dysfunction. For some, the joint prevents normal mouth opening; for others, the joint can become stuck, making all movements painful. The muscles surrounding the joint may also become stiff and sore. A dysfunctional TMJ joint can cause headaches or neck tension in severe cases.

The good news is that physiotherapy, massage therapy and chiropractic therapy can assist you in eliminating your jaw pain! Make an appointment with one of our skilled physiotherapists, registered massage therapists and chiropractors at MSK Health and Performance in Vancouver Kitsilano, Downtown Vancouver or Burnaby Metrotown today by clicking here.

What are the signs of TMJ disorder?

TMJ dysfunction is typically diagnosed by a dentist or doctor, but treatment to resolve this condition is often performed by a physiotherapist, chiropractor, or massage therapist. Our team is experienced in treating TMJ disorders and can assist you in determining the source of your pain.

We will perform a thorough examination that will include a detailed medical history as well as a physical examination. We will treat the joint and surrounding muscles to ensure proper alignment and function of your joint.

Teeth grinding or clenching (bruxism), dislocation of the disc between the ball and socket joint, arthritis, stress, or some type of trauma are all common causes of TMJ pain.

The following are the most common TMJ symptoms:

  • Pain or tenderness of your jaw
  • Pain in one or both of the temporomandibular joints
  • Pain in and around your ear (i.e., earaches)
  • Difficulty chewing or pain while chewing
  • Facial pain
  • Locking of the joint, making it difficult to open or close your mouth
  • Headaches in the temples

If you have any of the symptoms listed, please contact our Vancouver Kitsilano, Downtown Vancouver or Burnaby Metrotown physiotherapy centre for long-term pain relief!
