Sciatica Relief

What is Sciatica?

The diagnosis of sciatica can be misleading. The original intent was that sciatica was a diagnosis given to people with irritation of their sciatic nerve, a large nerve that passes through the buttock area. The reality is that there are many different problems that can create “sciatic” pain.

The pain patterns associated with sciatica may include pain in the lower back, buttocks, tailbone, hip, back or side of the leg and may extend into the calf or foot.  That’s a lot of areas and the way people present in the clinic varies dramatically.

Some people feel a steady ache while others feel sharp shooting pain, stabbing pain, or shocking pain.  Other common symptoms of sciatica include numbness, tingling, or burning. The postures and movements which provoke sciatica-type pain also vary. Some are worse with sitting while others are worse with standing; bending forward or backward can both be painful for different people.  Coughing and sneezing can also provoke sciatic pain.

What Factors Cause Sciatica Pain?

Problems that can cause sciatic pain include but are not limited to:

  • Sciatic nerve compression by the muscles in the buttock region
  • Spinal disc herniation compressing a nerve root
  • Gluteal or deep hip muscle spasm or trigger points
  • Lower back muscle spasm or trigger points
  • Lumbar joint dysfunction/ facet syndrome
  • Sacro-iliac joint dysfunction/ SI syndrome
  • Poor blood circulation to the legs (vascular claudication)
  • Nerve compression by bone spurs (neurogenic claudication)

As you can see, some of the causes of sciatica aren’t due to nerve compression. Pain spreading into the leg can sometimes be due to pain referral from muscles or joints and not always from nerve irritation.

Using the term “sciatica” as a diagnosis is similar to using “headache” as a diagnosis.  You still need to determine the actual cause.  Luckily, the chiropractors and physiotherapists at MSK clinics are experts at assessing sciatica to determine the cause and ensure you are getting the right treatment.

The good news is that the majority of people recover from sciatica. The bad news is that many people will have more than one episode, and the condition may worsen. Our physiotherapists, registered massage therapists and chiropractors at MSK Health and Performance in Vancouver Kitsilano, Downtown Vancouver and Burnaby Metrotown will address your symptoms, but more importantly, we will get to the root of the problem and provide you with the tools you need to resolve your pain and prevent it from returning in the future!
