Our doctors and therapists have extensive experience helping people with injuries from motor vehicle accidents.

Whiplash (neck and back pain) is a common result of car accidents but, depending on the nature of the accident, any number of injuries can occur. At MSK Clinics, we treat back and neck injuries as well as injuries to the arms or legs.

What Is Whiplash?

Most whiplash injuries result from a collision that includes sudden acceleration or deceleration. Many whiplash injuries occur when you are involved in a rear-end automobile collision.

The common result is an injury to the muscles, joints and connective tissues of the neck and back. The nerves themselves may rarely be injured, or the pain of the injury will result in sensitization of the nervous system which may make movement painful.

These are the most common symptoms of whiplash:

  • Neck pain
  • Shoulder pain
  • Mid / upper back pain
  • Low back pain
  • Headaches
  • Dizziness
  • Pain in your arm or hand
  • Numbness in your arm or hand
  • Irritability
  • Sleeplessness
  • Tiredness

The symptoms of whiplash may look like other conditions and medical problems. Our chiropractors or physiotherapists will complete a thorough history and examination and will refer you to your medical physician whenever it is appropriate.

Treatment will depend on the stage of healing. In the beginning, the goal is to control inflammation and reaction to the injury. Later the goal will be to improve mobility or facilitate tissue healing/organization in the muscles, joints and connective tissue. Strengthening is important to assist in organizing tissue healing as well as improving your capacity for work, sport and life.

Counsel and guidance to reassure you as you return to more activity is also an important part of preventing disability from motor vehicle injuries.

MSK Clinics offers a collaborative team of Chiropractors, Physiotherapists, Registered Massage Therapists and Kinesiologists to help you during the healing process after an accident.

How long will it take to recover from a whiplash injury?

While most people who have a whiplash injury recover within a few weeks to a few months, some have persistent pain for several months or longer.
