Pelvic floor physiotherapy is a specialized branch of physiotherapy involving internal and external assessment and treatment of the pelvic floor muscles. At MSK Clinics our healthcare professionals will tailor a treatment to your individual needs.
What is Pelvic Floor Physiotherapy?
Pelvic floor physiotherapists are specially trained in the assessment and treatment of issues related to the pelvic floor. The muscles, bones, ligaments, connective tissue, and nerves of the pelvis all work together to carry out essential functions such as organ support, sexual function, and maintaining continence. Like any other area in our bodies, the pelvic floor can cause pain or dysfunction, which can present in many different ways. The changes that happen during our lives such as normal aging, pregnancy, menopause, surgery, or lifestyle can all affect the health of our pelvic floor. A pelvic floor physiotherapist can help to treat your symptoms and maximize your quality of life.
Who should consider seeing a pelvic health physiotherapist?
Women or men who experience any of the following:
1. Urinary frequency – the need to urinate so often it impacts your day
2. Urinary urgency – overwhelming urge to urinate
4. Painful intercourse
5. Chronic low back or hip pain
8. Diastasis Recti
9. Interstitial cystitis
10. Pre or postnatal pain or dysfunction – it is recommended that postnatal patients wait until after their 6 week check-up to make an appointment
What to expect?
Prior to your appointment, you will be asked to fill out questionnaires related to your past and current medical history, allowing the physiotherapist to better understand your individual needs. Your physiotherapist will begin the assessment by taking a full medical history and thoroughly discussing your current symptoms and concerns. If you consent, the physiotherapist will then go on to perform an external and internal pelvic floor exam. Your comfort and privacy are the top priority during treatment sessions.
